Freudenstadt

We stayed in the town of Freudenstadt, which was about thirty minutes from Steve's work in Germany. It's sits on the northern edge of the Black Forest and boasts the largest market square in Germany. The town dates back to 1599.

I took a stroll one morning, camera in hand, whilst Steve was at work. I went early to beat the daily crowds of both locals and tourists who meandered about the massive markplatz every day.

My route from the hotel to the square included a small pedestrianized area
that featured seating and this monolith.

The clock tower on the Town Hall. The Town Hall.

The square is ringed by various shops and restaurants, like these.

One of several fountains in the square.

I really loved all the floral displays throughout Germany.

This building with the tall roof was home to a restaurant.

A close-up of the figure atop the fountain posted earlier.

Some more of the shops and restaurants that form the perimeter of the square. And more of those gorgeous flowers. As I walked about, I spotted the city workers watering the flowers.

Yet another floral display.

And yet another. I tried to get artistic with this one.

Another fountain a little closer to the restaurant I mentioned earlier.

This is supposed to be a statue of Venus.

Every time I see it, I think of a skateboarder.

The Lutheran Church is on the south side of the square, and across a busy street.

The church was constructed during the first decade of the 17th Century.

A shot of the shops and restaurants the border the south side of the square, next to the church.

Some of the shops and restaurants on the other side of the L-shaped church.

This fountain was near the church. It is one of my favorites.

A closer view of the church's clock tower.

Here's the church's door.

And a close-up of the coats of arms above the door.

Some more of those floral displays.

This fountain is in the northeast corner of the square. It's part of an elaborate water
feature that spans across the outdoor seating areas of several restaurants.

This is the close-up of the bathing bird. Technically, he's showering in the spit of his fellow crows.

A closer shot of some of the spitting crows.

And the rest of the group.

This long channel connects the various seating areas to smaller fountains and the main spitting crow feature. The ramps make the water move and splash like ocean waves. I was fascinated.

And yet more flowers.

A popular restaurant with a rather pretty facade.

Yep, more flowers.

Another shot of the Town Hall as I made my way back to my hotel.

Guess what.

This area is just the northwest corner of the square. The space is truly massive.

These are some buildings along a side street. I found it picturesque.

And this is our hotel, the Hotel Adler. It was a small, family-run boutique hotel and restaurant.
While the rooms were a bit small, they were nicely appointed in a very modern style. The food
was quite good, and the staff were all warm and friendly. If you find yourself in
Freudenstadt, I recommend you spend the night here.
