9-11

In England, 9-11 is just September 11th. If it weren't for the handful of commemorative posts on Facebook and the e-card my Mom sent me, I wouldn't even know it was a holiday. Okay, that's an exaggeration. I mean, obviously I know what today is. But here it is just another day. And honestly, I think I prefer that.

On Memorial Day, we honor those who gave their lives to help make and keep this country free and strong. On Veterans Day we honor those who served in the military and helped make and keep this country free and strong. I realize we're honoring those who lost their lives on 9-11-01, both the innocent bystanders and the heroes in uniform (and aboard a plane bound for the Pentagon). But beyond that, all that day signifies is the loss of freedom in this country and more loss of military lives. Nothing good came of that day. There is no silver lining.  So this year, I like that I'm somewhere where 9-11 is just Wednesday, September 11th.

Please do not misunderstand me. I'm not saying those who were killed on 9-11 don't deserve to be remembered. I just find it almost overwhelmingly depressing remembering what else we lost that day. And in light of current events, I fear that 9-11 may just be the tip of the iceberg.
