Seen from the Road

One of the great things about Scotland, particularly the Highlands, is that the journey is just as enjoyable as the destination. The landscape is so beautiful. Every bend reveals something new and exciting. Which is why I have a lot of posts with photos taken from the car. I just can't help sharing!

Here are a few snaps taken as we made our way home.

I had been admiring this church in Gairloch, but never found myself in a good position to take a photograph. We stopped for petrol on our way out of town. As Steve was handling the pump, I looked out and, lo and behold, there was the church! So I popped out of the car, went to the edge of the carpark, and snapped this pic. It's a lovely little church that sits high on a cliff overlooking the loch.

We paused at a viewpoint for one last look at Gairloch before we bade it goodbye.

And this is an excellent example of every bend exposing something beautiful.

When I first saw this munro, I thought it had a "normal" top that was shrouded in the clouds. It was only when Steve stopped for me to get a good photo of it that I realized that its top is concave.

After I snapped the photo of the munro, I looked down and these rocks that had tumbled into the loch. The heather in the foreground is a nice touch.

And a final shot of the varied landscape that is Wester Ross.

We enjoyed our little holiday so much that we have decided to take a week and drive the entire North Coast 500. It's been labeled as Scotland's Route 66 because it takes you through the smaller, sometimes lesser-known, places of northern Scotland. Our trip to Wester Ross followed a portion of the NC 500. And our day trip a year ago up to John O'Groats covered some of it, as well.

The entire NC 500 is 516 miles (I guess NC 516 isn't as catchy a title). Our plan ris to cover about 75-100 miles each day to allow us time to stop wherever the mood strikes. There is a lot to see, after all. And we've picked a couple of places where we'll stay a couple of nights so we can explore a bit more. We're thinking April 2018 for the trip.
